Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage undertaken by Muslims to the holy city of Makkah, Saudia. Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who can afford it, Umrah is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year. It is an opportunity for Muslims to seek spiritual purification, strengthen their faith, and earn immense rewards from Allah. The journey of Umrah begins with the intention (niyyah) and entering the state of Ihram, a special sacred state of purity marked by wearing simple white garments for men and modest attire for women. Upon arrival in Makkah, pilgrims perform Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times in an act of devotion and submission to Allah. This is followed by Sa’i, the symbolic reenactment of Hagar’s search for water between the hills of Safa and Marwah, signifying perseverance and faith. The pilgrimage concludes with Tahallul, where men trim or shave their hair and women cut a small portion, symbolizing renewal and humility before Allah. While in Makkah, pilgrims also visit key religious sites such as the Maqam Ibrahim, the well of Zamzam, and Mount Arafat, where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his farewell sermon. Many also extend their journey to Madinah, the city of the Prophet, to pray at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and visit his blessed tomb.
